IBRD Curbs Korea"s Restructuring for 5 Biggest Chaebols

Sept 09,1998
The Korean government's financial support for the five biggest chaebols' restructuring, the so-called 'big deals,' will likely face a bottleneck.
An official of the government, on condition of anonymity, said, 'IBRD (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) has indicated that if the Korean government gives financial preferences to the big five, it would reconsider additional bailouts equivalent to 2 billion dollars.'
IBRD is scheduled to provide the second bailout (2 billion dollars) between October and year-end in order to support Korea's restructuring.
