Construction on 227 Roads Restarted

Suspended construction of 227 roads will begin again due to new financing. The Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) announced on September 13 that it secured 1.3 trillion won from a supplementary revised budget.
One trillion won of the budget will be used on superhighway construction. The Western Coast superhighway will be open by 2001, the Andong-Yongju section of the Yongdong superhighway by 1999, and the Wonju-Hongchun section of the Central superhighway by 2001.
MOCT plans to open the Hamyang-Jinju section of the Taejun - Jinju superhighway and the Chungwon-Hoidok section of the Chungwon-Biryong superhighway by October as scheduled. MOCT will also open temporarily the Saemal-Hoingye section of the Yongdong superhighway in preparation for Yongpyong Winter Asian Games in January 1999.
Ordinary national roads will use the remaining 250 billion won budget to restart construction on 110 sections of road. MOCT predicted that this construction will create 50,000 jobs.
