Korean Society Rocked by Breakdown in Morality

Unimaginably immoral behavior is occurring more and more frequently in Korean society. On September 6, a 10 year old elementary school boy had his finger cut off allegedly in the course of robbery. However, his father was arrested on suspicion of this crime following his confession on September 12. The police alleged that he committed the crime because will he wished to collect on an insurance policy taken out on his son. According to the police, this cruel father asked the insurance company how much he could collect if his son lost a finger and then committed the crime.
Last July another father was arrested on suspicion of murdering his son by making him drink yogurt containing pesticides. A three year old boy's mother and step father were also arrested on suspicion of killing him in June.
Criminology experts indicated that the economic difficulties stemming from the sluggish economy is main cause for these crimes as well as 'distorted family values'. Dr. Han Sang Jin of Seoul National University said, 'Low-income people suffering from severe economic difficulties are prompted to commit these extremely cruel crimes. Our definition of 'distorted family values' comes from the thought that although one member has to be sacrificed, the whole family should be saved.'
