Russia Concludes Korean Murder Investigation

The Russian government reported to the Korean government on September 30 that they have stopped the investigation on consul Choi Duk Keun's death. The official conclusion of the investigators was that he was killed by an unknown person as a result of random violence.
Choi, a Korean diplomatic consul to Vladivostok, was killed on October 1,1996. An autopsy was performed in Seoul and a poison, commonly used by North Korean agents, was detected. South Korean authorities suspected the murder was planned and carried out by North Korean spies.
But the Russian government did not openly investigate a political motive opting instead to treat it as a low profile case with little public disclosure. This obvious appeasement to North Korea will more than likely bring a new diplomatic chill with South Korea.
A source from the Korean government said, 'We cannot understand Russian's lack of credible information on this murder for they have supposedly searched the case for two years.'
