Korean Army Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Korean military forces celebrated their 50th anniversary on October 1. The Korean Army and Navy were founded on September 5, 1948 and the Air force on October 1, 1949.
The Korean Army's inception was followed two years later by a devastating war fought against North Korea. The 'civil' war started on June 25th 1950, when North Korean forces poured over the border.
The current military strength of the Korean military forces which has developed for half a century are as follows:
* The Army
The army is composed of 11 corps, more than 50 divisions and more than 20 brigades.
Accordingly, the army has more than 560,000 armed forces, 2,200 tanks, 4,580 cannons and 2,250 armored cars.
* The Navy
The navy has 67,000 armed forces including the marine corps which is organized into 2 divisions and 1 brigade , 170 destroyers, 30 cruisers, 6 submarines and more than 60 jet fighters.
* The Air force
The air force has 63,000 armed forces, 550 jet fighters including a newly produced war plane, F16 and 180 planes for other functions.
