1997 Mining and Manufacturing Industries" Statistics Released

The number of companies in mining and manufacturing industries dropped for the first time in 17 years and the number of employees decreased by the broadest margin in history. Total salaries paid also fell for the first time in industry history.
According to 'Statistics on Mining and Manufacturing Industries in 1997' announced by the Statistics Administration on October 13, the number of companies in these industries decreased by 5.2% (5,1220) to 92,999. The number of employees in these fields fell by 6.9% (200,300) to 2.72 million.
The total sum of salary given to employees dropped by 2.0% to 41.9 trillion won. However white collar salaries increased by 4.7% where as blue collar salaries decreased by 3.3%. Total sales in these industries increased by 8.3% to 432.8 trillion won but it is the lowest increase rate in recent history.
