Two NK Soldiers Defect to the South

Oct 14,1998
Two North Korean soldiers defected to the South through the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the northern part of Kangwon province at daybreak on October 14. A male officer, Captain Suk Young Hwan and a female sergeant, Song Myung Soon from the North Korean Army made the daring escape. The Ministry of National Defense (MOND) announced that a military intelligence team was investigating their reason and route of defection.
The two escaped from the North under a cover of thick fog and had to scream and shout to show their intention to defect. Cap. Suk wore a civilian shirt and military slacks and Sergeant Song was in military uniform. South Korean guards immediately thought the two were defectors and led them to a safety area because they were not armed. Cap. Suk was a medical officer while Sergeant Song was a telephone operator in the same military unit.
