Exclusive Declaration of East Sea

The U.S. map maker Rand McNally declared that the body of water separating Korea and Japan is the 'East Sea', not the 'Sea of Japan', in its CD-ROM map entitled 'New Millennium World Atlas Deluxe'. According to the Korean Overseas Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on October 16, it is the first time that a U.S. company declared the sea the 'East Sea' without the name 'Sea of Japan'. This battle will be judged a victory for Korea in the ongoing controversy with Japan.
A source at KOCIS said that Chicago-based Britanica also insured the status of 'East Sea' placing it inside parenthesis beside 'Sea of Japan' on its big size world map book entitled 'Portrait World Atlas'. Britanica Encyclopedia decided to use both names in October 1997.
