New Gov"t Culture Policy

The government announced a new culture policy which will concentrate upon establishing the basis and state of culture in the 21st century. The government plans to increase budgets for culture from 0.6% to 1% in 2001 and 1.4% in 2003.
Shin Nak Kyun, the Minister of Culture and Tourism said, 'We plan to make a five year development plan for cultural industries and enact a culture bill around the end of this year. The government will introduce a culture lottery in the year 2000 to create 500 billion won in funds for the culture industry promotion.'
Shin continued, 'We also plan to register the Demilitarized Zone as a World Culture Heritage Site to UNESCO, to improve Korean traditional music instruments, and to excavate cultural relics in cooperation with the North.' The government will deregulate 50% of existing regulations by the end of this year and 70% by 2000.
