Gov"t Unveils Line Up for Incoming Japanese Culture

The government, on October 20, unveiled the opening lineup for Japanese culture's introduction into the Korean market. Japanese movies awarded famous international prizes including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and Hollywood's Academy awards can be put on the screen immediately. Additionally, the door is wide open to movies produced by a joint Japan-Korean team and movies that Koreans either directed or starred in. Video tapes for these movies can also freely enter the Korean market. Furthermore, Japanese comic books can be imported at once.
Movies, videos, and comics that sufficiently meet conditions laid out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 'will be imported into the Korean market immediately', Shin Nak Kyun said. The minister continued, 'The opening plan for the remaining Japanese cultural products will be discussed by a committee for Korea-Japan culture exchanges.' The committee, Shin added, 'will be led by the private sector in cooperation with other official agencies including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MOCT).'
Officials in cultural areas indicated that this opening will abolish the discrimination applied distinctively to Japanese culture and lend more competitive power to our cultural industries. MOCT will enlarge their budget to expand theaters and provide education in the popular arts to improve competency.
