Illegal Aliens Number 93,000

The number of illegal aliens, the Finance and Economy Ministry and Justice Ministry revealed on October 21, 'reached 92,686 and most of them are working illegally.'
In November, 1993 the government enacted an industrial education progam which approved foreigners to work and train in the Korean industrial sector. Since then 82,800 workers, mainly from China as well as southeast Asia, have come to Korea to work legitimately.
However, the program was halted because of the high unemployment rate after the IMF bailout. The government forced 61,689 illegal aliens to emigrate without fines or penalties at the end of 1997. The administration plans to keep tight control over illegal aliens and see that they leave the country.
