KAL to Purchase New Planes

The accident-prone Korean Air Lines(KAL) will replace its old planes with state of the art new planes.
KAL announced, October 25, that it will sell eight older airplanes and buy seven brand new planes. The airplanes KAL decided to unload, by the end of this year, are mainly B747SP and 747-200 type planes which are 17 and 25 years old, respectively.
The new planes to be imported within this year are three Boeing 747-400s, three Boeing 777s, and one Airbus 330.
After these puchases and sell-offs the average age of the whole KAL fleet will be lowerd by 0.9 years to 6.99 years from 7.89 years in 1998.
The average age of KAL's competitor Asiana Airlines is 3.93 years.
KAL, which recently incurred a severe purnishment from the government because of a series of accidents will import three more airplanes in 1999 and a further 16 in 2000.
