100 Korean Nationals in Sakhalin to Return Permanently

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trading (MOFAT) announced on October 27 that 100 Korean nationals living in Sakhalin, Russia will move to Korea permanently at the beginning of 1999. They were forced to move to Sakhalin by Japanese colonial rulers from 50 to 60 years ago.
A source at MOFAT said, 'We will select 100 people among the first generation who want to live in a senior's facility in Inchon' The government plans to build 500 apartment in Ansan, Kyunggi province and make 1,000 Sakhalin nationals live there permanently.
Korea and Japan agreed in 1994 that Japan will provide the cost of construction while Korea supplies sites. The government will dispatch a delegation to Sakhalin on November 28.
