Rose War Between Korea and Japan

There is a 'Rose War' between Korea and Japan. It seems that from next month, rose royalties will be strictly enforced on all exported roses to Japan.
According to market experts, Japanese rose companies recently decided to strengthen the sanctions on roses grown from patented seed stock without paying a royalty fee.
In Korea's case, rose exports to Japan this year marked nearly 2 million dollars, 40 times more than that of last year.
A major Japanese flower company 'Keisei Rose' is currently asking Korean importers to pay royalties beginning in November 1998 while the Japanese government is preparing to prohibit all applicable roses that have not been imposed a royalty.
The royalties in Europe are usually on average a dollar per blossom, and Japan is expected to require 80-100 yen per blossom.
The total number of flowers Korea exported last year reached 5,300,000 dollars while 7,850,000 dollars have been shipped as of September this year.
Japan imported 500 million dollars worth of roses from Korea last year.
Japanese rose dealers are insisting, 'Since the 1980s Lotte Rose and Little Marble have gone over to Korea and spread without any restrictions, so it is high time to impose proper royalties to Korean exporters.'
Not only roses, in the near future strawberries and chrysanthemums from abroad will be under patent regulations.
About 70% of the seed market in Korea is under the control of foreign management.
