Teacher"s Retirement Age to Be Lowered to 60
The government plans to shorten teachers' retirement age from 65 to 60. The new age limit will force 19,854, 7.7% of all teachers, to retire and make room for school systems to hire younger teachers. Additionally, 6,500 principals (78%) and 1,400 vice principals (17%) will be forced to retire regardless of their age limit. The Planning and Budget Commission (PBC) proposed the bill for lowering the mandatory retirement age for teachers on October 2. If this bill is passed into law, 19,854 teachers will be required to leave schools in 1999. However, certain teachers, who are qualified and above average teachers in computers, art, English, and math, can be hired as temporary teachers, if school boards give their reccommendation.
The PBC said that it can achieve a savings of 500 billion won which could be redirected to improve educational equipment and facilities. Jin Nyum, the head of the PBC said, 'This plan can revitalize the teaching community by changing old members with younger ones.'
