Gov"t to Abolish 145 Committees

In an effort to downsize the government will eliminate 39% of its government committees. The government plans to abolish 117 committees, which had proven to be redundant, and will integrate another 28.
The committees will be disposed of by the first half of 1999 but any measures taken for five committees will be delayed until 2000 to 2002. These committees are the Independence Bond Redemption Committee, Criminal Law Revision Special Committee, Economic Crimes Management Committee, People Related to Kwangju Democratization Movement Support Committee, and Cheju Island Development Support Committee.
The government will integrate 22 committees including the Education Policy Deliberation Committee, Tourism Policy Deliberation Committee, and Agricultural Information and Statistics Deliberation Committee into the Policy Consultative Committee of each ministry. The administration also plans to reconsider whether or not it will maintain the remaining committees every two years. The committees which should be abolished comprise the National Energy Saving Committee of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Personnel Policy Deliberation Committee of the Government Administration and Home Affairs Ministry, as well as others.
