"Big Deal" Unlikely to Violate U.S. Anti-trust Laws

Mr. Pitovsky, the head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in an interview with a JoongAng reporter stated, 'There is only a small probability that the 'Big Deals' which the five biggest Korean chaebols are undertaking will violate U.S. anti-trust laws.' A segment of the interview with Mr. Pitovsky is as follows:
Q; Korean law on fair trade practices approves the consolidation of companies as an exception to competition and anti-trust laws if there is evidence of economic efficiency. Are there any exceptions in the U.S. anti-trust law?
A; 'If a company enjoy a monopolistic status with outstanding technology and vision, it is no problem. But, the company will be punished if it uses the consolidation of its competitors. However, if efficiency increases greatly, the law approves consolidation once in a while, according to 1995 revisions.'
Q; Is it possible for the U.S. government to approve the chaebol's moves, if the 'Big Deals' among Korean companies are benefitial to consumers in the U.S.?
A; I can not give a clear answer until after the details of a particular 'Big Deal' are revealed. In my extent of knowledge, there is only a small probability that the government will oppose such a move.
