New Priviledge Law Will Not Apply to Koreans With Foreign Citizenship

The government has aknowledged its intention to exclude Koreans with foreign citizenship from applying for new priviledges stemming from a law meant for overseas Koreans.
The new priviledge law, introduced last month and targeted for implementation on July 1, 1999, provides the same kinds of legal status and priviledges enjoyed by Korean residents to all overseas Koreans irrespective of their citizenship.
A source at the government said on November 16,
'If the government were to apply the new law towards Koreans with foreign citizenship, friction from foreign countries would be inevitable.'
Accordingly, diplomatic confrontations with foreign countries including China, the CIS and the United States will likely be avoided.
