Electronics Industry Exports" Winners and Losers

The leading export items of the electronics industry are changing. The exports of Braun tube type monitors and home appliances including refrigerator and washing machines are sagging whereas that of high value added information equipment including cellular phones, TFT-LCD, hard disk drives, and personal computers are rapidly growing.
The Korea Electronics Industry Promotion Association (KEIPA) announced on November 22 that cellular phone exports reached 960 million dollars as of September and are predicted to reach 1.3 billion dollars by the end of this year. The exports of TFT-LCDs are forecasted to grow by 70% from 700 million dollars to 1.2 billion dollars and that of personal computers are also predicted to increase by 50%.
However, washing machine exports are expected to decrease by more than 10% and that of refrigerators and air conditioner will probably suffer decreases or at best remain at last year's levels.
A source at the KEIPA said, 'The number of cellular phones, TFT-LCDs, and hard disk drives will increase from 1.5% to more than 2.5%. Information equipment has a very high value added.'
