"No Strikes" Declarations Spreading

A development in a desirable direction one year after the IMF bail out in Korea? Strong Korean trade unions are becoming more flexible and cooperative with management.
Trade unions which have declared 'no strike', or even 'no dispute' are increasing recently.
According to the Ministry of Labor on November 30, around 60 companies' labor unions, during the month of November, have declared not to undertake any strike action.
Korea Informatics and Talesis Inc(KIT), a sudsidiary of Korea Telecom, Tae Kwang Ind., Daewoo Precision Ind., Cheil Jedang, and Lotte Ham Milk, decided not to engage in any strikes.
KIT held a mass rally at its headquarters in Seoul and five local work places on November 30 in a show of cooperation between labor and management, and issued a three-clause resolution in which both sides agreed on mutual respect, reliance and trust.
Tae Kwang Ind.'s Pusan factory held a 'labor-management cooperation athletic meeting' on Nov. 21 and jointly declared, 'There will be no single strike or even a labor dispute in the year 1999.'
Due to the instabilty of labor market since the IMF bail out, more trade unions are expected to participate in 'no strike' declarations.
