Film Industry Holds Demonstration
Korean film stars, directors and other film industry workers demonstrated on December 1 to maintain the domestic screen quota system, which the government is considering abolishing due to heavy lobbying by the U.S. 700 industry workers participated in the rally held in downtown Seoul.Participants said, 'The government has been discovered surrendering to U.S. pressure and reducing the current mandatory number of running days of Korean movies in domestic theaters. We will fight to keep making and showing Korean movies inspite of the U.S. conspiracy to invade the Korean film market.'
Demonstrators carried their portraits draped in black ribbon signifying their death as they mourned the anticipated death of Korean movies in a processional along the main street in front of a government complex.
The workers added, 'We will stage a sit-down strike at Myongdong Catholic Cathedral.' They stopped all film production activity on this day and will do so again on December 4.
