Samsung May Hire Samsung Motor Co."s Redundant Workers

Samsung is considering hiring some of the employees who will be laid off when Samsung Motor Company is integrated with Daewoo. Samsung's year-old car division is supposed to be swallowed by Daewoo Motors according to chaebol restructuring moves or the so-called 'Big Deal'. The merger will create a lot of redundant positions.
Hong Jong Man, the chairman of Samsung Motor Company, said on December 14, 'I will make every effort to maintain our current employment levels by 100%. Additionally, I promise that Samsung will hire workers which Daewoo does not want. If some employees are treated unfairly after they go to Daewoo, Samsung will also provide for them.'
Lee Hak Soo, the chairman of the Samsung Restructuring Center, also reportedly emphasized that employees who cannot be hired by Daewoo Motors should be taken care of. A source at Samsung said, 'There is a consensus inside Samsung Group that the manpower at Samsung Motor Company is outstanding so they should not be jobless. A program that provides for them will be crystallized as negotiations with Daewoo begin.'
