Samsung to Export CDMA to Australia

On December 12, Samsung Electronics concluded a 215 million-dollar contract to supply Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile telecommunication equipment to Australia-based Hutchinson Telecom Australia (HTAL).
Samsung defeated U.S.-based Lucent Technologies, Motorola, and the Canadian company Nortel in an open competition to receive the order.
Samsung will supply the equipment beginning in January 1999. HTAL will begin service in Sydney and Melbourne after building 447 communication bases.
This contract will be operate by the BOT (Build, Operation & Transfer) System in which the provider, Samsung, is responsible for operation as well as facility construction.
Samsung must guarantee facility maintenance for eight years. Until now, communications equipment has been exported only to developing countries including Eastern Europe, and South America.
The Ministry of Information & Technology and Samsung expects that Korea will gain an advantage in receiving orders from other countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
