Lang Supports Korean Film Workers

Former French Cultural Minister Jacques Lang sent a letter of support to Korean film workers who are now struggling to keep the 'screen quota system' which stipulates that theaters must screen more than 100 days a year of domestic films.
Mr. Lang said in his letter, 'The French people are extremly surprised to hear that the U.S. is increasingly pressuring Korean people to open their film market more widely, even though the GATT has acknowledged that the sound and motion picture industry is an exceptional case.'
He continued, 'It is absolutely unacceptable that the U.S. is trying to damage the cultural dignity of the Korean people.'
He insisted that if and when the existing screen quota system is damaged even partially, movies will be degraded to just another consumer product, and in the long run the sound and motion picture industry will also be reduced to a mere product.
He added, 'I support you, the Korean people, in your struggle to safeguard your cultural identity and to fight against the conspiracy of the American mercantilists. Your struggle is our struggle and Europe stands beside you.'
