Christmas Carols Seldom Heard This Year
This year's hard times are even affecting Christmas carols in Korea. Voices lifted in joyful song are seldom heard above the pervasive economic gloom. In past years, 20 to 30 Christmas songs were released this time of year. But this year, just five or six cassettes and CDs featuring carols were made.
Customers who used to flock to stores in search of Christmas songs have decreased by more than 50 percent with sales plummetting.
An employee at a CD store lamented, 'In the past, sales of CDs with Christmas carols accounted for approximately 50 percent of our holiday sales total. This year, it could drop to as low as 20 percent.'
