Gov"t to Revise Departure Ban Regulations

The Ministry of Justice announced on December 27 that it will fortify the regulations on conditions for imposing departure bans on individuals.
According to revisions expected to be enforced in early January 1999, the Ministry will raise fines from the current 5 million won to 10 million won on those who do not pay earlier fines and impose a departure ban.
The Ministry also changed conditions under which a departure ban can be issued. Those who owe national taxes or duty in the amount of 50 million won, up from the current 20 million won, will be prohibited from leaving the country. In the case of financial losses, the current 1 billion won criteria will be raised to more than 5 billion won.
