The Last Day of National Assembly in 1998
The controversial bill to lower the retirement age of teachers to 62 was passed by the Education Committee of the National Assembly. 12,600 teachers ranging from 63 to 65 years old will be forced to retire in 1999.The National Assembly opened six standing committees and passed various bills including a revision of the educational civil servants law brought forth by the National Congress for New Politics (NCNP) and the United Liberal Democrats (ULD) which essentially gives teachers the right to form a union.
The controversial revision was a strictly partisan affair with nine representatives of the NCNP and ULD voting for it and seven representatives of the opposition Grand National Party (GNP) voting against it.
