Foreign Factories Building Possible in the Capital"s Area
Foreign-invested companies in some industries can build their factories in the nation's capital area by 2001.The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE) announced, on January 2, the 20 industries of which foreign-invested companies can build factories in the Seoul Metropolitan area.
So far, the constuction of new factories by big companies was prohibited because of a government policy aimed to reduce the population of the capital's area and preserve the environment in and around the Han River.
The designated areas are Hwasung, Pyongtaek, Osan, Ansan, Paju, Pochon, Dongduchon, Yangju, Kimpo, and Kanghwa in Kyonggi province as well as other areas in Inchon including Sihwa.
The manufacturing industries announced include computer, auto parts, electronic integrated circuitry, and broadcasting equipment.
