Sales of Communication Devices Approved

Communication equipment such as anti-eavesdropping and encryption devices, which have long been prohibited to the general public by the government, will be available for sale from July 1999.
The regulatory law on communication devices has been changed. There will be no way the government can keep people from maintaining the privacy of their communication.
This is a progressive step for better ensuring privacy and will assuage people's suspicions on being monitored especially anti-government sectors.
An official of the Ministry of Information and Communications on January 15 said, 'We have talked with the Agency of National Security Planning(former KCIA) on this issue and the KCIA chief, Lee Jong Chan, was very optimistic on releasing and selling these apparatus to the puplic.'
Both sides agreed that personal information and privacy should be protected at all times rather than at the government's convenience.
In the United States, communication preservation facilities were approved for sale in 1977 while in 1982 in Japan for the purpose of privacy.
