Ruling Coalition to Begin Hearings without Opposition

The Special Committee for the Financial Crisis Investigation of the National Assembly will begin the 27-day economic hearing on January 18.
The ruling coalition will begin the hearing despite the absence of the opposition Grand National Party(GNP).
The GNP has publicly declared that it will not participate in the hearing unless the ruling coalition accepts the same number of committee members from among both the ruling and opposition parties.
Assembly majority and minority leaders plan to meet on January 18 but there is little likelihood that they will reach an agreement. The opposition holds the largest number of seats in the Assembly out of the three main parties.
On January 16, the special committee formed by the ruling coalition decided that 45 witnesses will be called to testify on the events leading up to the IMF bailout. An additional 45 people will supply information and expert opinion.
Kim Yong Sam, the former president and his son, Kim Hyun Chul, are included on the witness list, though whether they will actually appear is still in doubt. Lee Kyu Sung, the current minister of finance and economy, will be one of the first experts called at the hearing.
