Fraudulent Claims Drain Unemployment Benefits

More than one billion won of unemployment benefits were used improperly in supporting people who were ineligible for unemployment benefits.
The Ministry of Labor(MOL) revealed on January 20 that approximately one billion won out of its 680 billion won budget for unemployment benefits was misused.
People deceived the government by hiding the fact that they had jobs through the public works program, so they were receiving two sources of income from government coffers or double-dipping.
This is made possible because the government does not have an integrated computer network connecting local governments and the MOL.
If a person is able to receive the two different incomes from unemployment insurance and wages paid for public works, he or she can gain 1.8 million won per month. A source at MOL said, 'It is very difficult to discover illegal beneficiaries.' The government was able to recoup 430 million won from the fraudulent claimants.
