Movement to Ban Copying TV Programs

Jan 21,1999
Civil-rights groups began a full-scale movement to ban plagiarism on TV programs. The Seoul YMCA Viewers Civilian Movement Center announced on January 21 that it will begin a campaign to eliminate the blantant copying of Japanese TV programs by Korean TV networks.
Protestors plan to hold a conference and will bring examples of Korean TV programs that bear a more than passing resemblance to Japanese ones. They will also send a petition to the Korean Broadcasting Committee(KBC).
Lee Seung Jong, one of the leaders of the protest movement, said, 'Korean broadcasting companies have not changed their incessant copying of Japanese TV programs despite the repeated protests of many organizations.'
It was only recently that KBC began to address the issue. It requested that Japanese TV programs be sent to the Korean Broadcasting Promotion Center for comparison.
KBC has the authority to punish broadcasting companies who plagiarize other programs.
