International Conference for Environment-Friendly Consumption
On January 27, an international conference for environment-friendly consumption was held on Cheju Island. There are more than 80 experts from 14 countries at the conference that is being sponsored by the Ministry of Environment(MOE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade(MOFAT).
Dr. Kim Tae Wan of the Environment Policy Evaluation Institute said, 'Korea's energy consumption per person increased by 400 percent compared to 1978. The abrupt change of consumption patterns in East Asian countries has caused contamination of regional environments. International cooperation is needed urgently.'
Participants plan to discuss three parts including the influence of consumption patterns of advanced countries to East Asian countries, internationalization and the environment, and desirable traditional ways of life and the environment.
They will report the results of the conference to the United Nations.
