IBRD Requests Expansion of Public Works

The International Bank for Reconstuction and Devolopment(IBRD), also known as the World Bank, has requested that the Korean government expand its public works programs. The IBRD delegation, which has been visiting Korea since January 22, indicated that Korea's public works policy is not enough.
The public works budget was initially set at two trillion won but subsequently reduced to 1.5 trillion won because of controversy including allegation of budget misuse and ineffective programs.
The number of people who applied for public works in January reached 600,000 but only 330,000 jobs were provided.
The IBRD asked the government to expand its budget so as to provide work for all applicants. A source at the government said, 'We will make increase the total budget through a supplementary budget. We do not expect difficulties in receiving one billion dollars in support from the IBRD.'
