Anti-cancer Component Found in Garlic and Mushroom

Anti-cancer properties have long been attributed to garlic and certain kinds of mushrooms. Now, a chemical research team at Seoul National University, led by Dr. Yang Chul Hak, revealed on February 2 that the cancer-fighting component in garlic has been found. The component, apparently, suppresses the damaging function of lass protein.
Lass protein, in its mutated form, is reported to be a cause of cancer. Cancer cells grow when lass protein sends the wrong signals to cells. If something disrupts lass protein from functioning, it in effect can prevent cancer cells from growing.
Dr. Yang said, 'Some materials found in garlic and mushroom have been detected disturbing the function of lass protein.' This is the first time that a research team has isolated an anti-cancer material in natural food.
