Korean Filmmakers to Forge United Front against US

Korean filmmakers ended a 63-day-long sit-in protest against Hollywood, in their fight to keep the 'Screen Quota System' which prescribes that all Korean theaters should screen Korean films at least 100 days a year.
An 'Emergency Committee to Secure Screen Quota'(ECSSQ) said in a press conference on February 2, 'We decided to return to work, but to make every effort to forge a united front against the U.S. in cooperation with other countries.'
ECSSQ explained, 'As it is still unclear whether the agreement on investment between Korea and the U.S. will be signed, we have decided on this course of action.'
ECSSQ will hold an 'International Solidarity Event to Keep Cultural Sovereignty' during the Pusan International Film Festival this fall.
It also plans to submit its agenda to the NGO Congress which will be held in Seoul this coming October.
ECSSQ will send a delegation to the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals in the first half of this year to publicize Korea's stance against Hollywood's encroachment.
Director Chung Jie Young said, 'We will raise this issue as part of the priciple of diversity of culture which does not permit a certain country's culture or movies to prevail over other countries'.'
