Massive Amnesty Expected for Feb. 25

There will be a large number of people granted amnesty and reinstatement by the government.
Park Sang Chon, the minister of justice, will be announcing those who will be released from prison after a cabinet meeting on February 22.
According to the Ministry of Justice, Woo Yong Gak, a 71-year-old who has been in prison for more than 41 years on spying charges, will be released, despite the fact he refuses to sign a normally-required document pledging he will follow the laws of the democratically-elected government.
Furthermore, Park Ji Man, former-President Park Chung Hee's only son, who has been repeatedly imprisoned for drug possession, will be pardoned as well. Park is currently on probation.
However, another former president, Kim Young Sam's, second son Hyun Chul, who was charged with various tax violations will not be included this time because he refused to participate in last month's economic hearing.
The actual date of the amnesty will be February 25, the first anniversary of President Kim Dae Jung's inauguration.
