Metro Plans Totally Revised

All national subway system plans, including Metro Seoul's planned extensions, will be scrapped and proposals will be re-examined.
Lee Jong Moo, minister of construction and transportation, stated that he reported to President Kim Dae Jung, on February 23, massive changes in his '1999 Business Operation Report.'
Korea's six major cities had planned high-tech, expensive subway line creations or expansions, but the government decided to opt for cheaper light-railway styles, instead.
Moreover, the commencement of construction will temporarily be delayed as well to finalize plans.
At the end of this year nine more short highways totaling 150 kilometers including the Central Expressway will be constructed.
Lee said, 'Some local governments are proposing subway projects without a proper budget plan, which will only pile up astronomical debt. We should give carefully scrutinize all mega-projects to avoid wasting money.'
Seoul's construction of four new subway lines has not begun, and their completion will be considerably delayed.
