Pipe Organ Meets Orchestra

Mar 03,1999
The biggest organ in Korea resides at Sejong Cultural Hall. The organ was especially designed for the Sejong Cultural Hall when it opened in 1978, and at that time it was the biggest organ in all Asia. England's prime minister, Edward Heath, who was an amateur organist, played Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 2 , that very same year.
The pipe organ has 8,898 pipes and 98 stops which change the tone. Due to its complexity, few organists are capable of utilizing the organ to its full effect, and performances have been infrequent over the years.
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO), which is cunducted by Chang Yoon Sung, will perform its 574th regular concert, on March 12, and the pipe organ will accompany the orchestra.
Professor Kim Hee Sung of Ewha Woman's University will play the organ in the special performance.
The repertoire includes Richard Strauss' 'Till Eulenspiegel', 'Organ Concerto No. 1 in F Major' by Rheinberger, and 'Symphony No. 3 in F Major' by Brahams.
