Fishery Talks Scheduled for March 16 in Tokyo
There will be a Korea-Japan joint fisheries talk on March 16 and 17 in Tokyo, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced on March 4. The two countries had signed a fisheries agreement earlier this year, but it did not fully settle disputes on fishing quotas in one another's exclusive economic zones(EEZ).A source from the Ministry asserted, 'Part of the 6,500 tons of eel and flatfish qouta should be alloted to Korean fishermen, and we will be asking Japan's concession for a fair share.'
The puff or blow fish is another issue between the two countries. Both countries along with many other Southeast Asian fishermen compete for the prized fish in a disputed area in the South China Sea. The source added, 'This is originally China's territory so Japan does not have a right to prohibit fishing for blow fish.'
