Government"s Comprehensive Policy Elaborated
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on March 22, elaborated and solidified its comprehensive policy towards North Korea as suggested by President Kim Dae Jung.Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Hong Soon Young proposed the three major principles of the comprehensive policy on North Korea: condemnation of any hostile designs by North Korea- especially a surprise attack; South Korea's abandonment of a policy that sought the eventual absorption and unification of North Korea; and the expansion of exchanges and cooperation betwwen South and North Korea.
He said the comprehensive policy promotes South Korea, the U.S., and Japan offering assistance and exchanges with North Korea if it renounces military hostitlity, specifically abandoning its massive weapons development such as nuclear weapons and missiles.
The minister stated that a reciprical system was needed for the survival of North Korea's current regime. South Korea, the U.S., and Japan will improve their relationship with North Korea through significant humanitarian aid projects and economicic cooperation.
President Kim Dae Jung stated that these proposals are far too attractive for North Korea to reject.
