Government to Decrease About 26,000 Public Officials by 2000

The government decided to decrease up to 25,900 public officials on March 23, including the reduction of 8,000 public officials stemming from the continuing reshufflement of government organizations to the end of year 2000.
This is 16 percent of the total number of public officials, thereby achieving a real reduction in the public service sector.
The government decided to establish a central commitee of personnel under the direct control of the president and set up the Korea Planning and Budget Administration, which combines the Commission for Planning and Budget with the Korea Budget Administration, under the control of the prime minister.
The government announced that it will pass the the reshufflement proposals in the State Council meeting on March 30. It also will finish up the open appointment system, which replaces 30 percent of the directors of governmental bureaus with private professionals, by the end of year 2000.
