Satellite TV Finally On the Horizon

Cable TV subscribers will be able to receive programs directly through satellite broadcasting in the not too distant future.
The Ministry of Information and Communications, on March 25, announced that it will allow people to receive direct service through satellite receivers. The long expected move will alleviate the expense of providing service to remote places and rural areas as well as expand existing services.
So far, cable companies in Korea have provided all their programming through cable lines to consumers.
The Ministry expects that with the new policy approximately 80 million dollars will be saved by reducing the cost of laying cables and sharing technology.
Since the cable network business has long been mired in problems and poor profits, the new proposal might help activate a surge in the media industry and usher in wider access to more programming through an increased number of channels.
