National Security Law to Be Clearly Defined

The national security law, which has long been held as a violation of human rights, will be modified in its scope and severity and more clearly defined with fewer punishable offences.
In addition, the central investigation unit in the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, likewise known for its disregard for civil liberties, will be replaced by a curruption investigation bureau that will focus on government corruption.
On March 25, Park Sang Chun, the minister of justice, stated, 'The current security law proscribes any 'beneficial activity towards North Korea should be punished'. This has created a lot of ambiguity which has at times infringed on individuals' human rights, so we will provide the clearer definition of prosecuting any activities 'encroaching on our national defense'.'
A source from the Ministry added, 'In the future, anyone who unwittingly possesses idealogical books that praise North Korea will not be penalized as we are preparing a new law to replace the former security law.'
The new investigating department in the prosecutor's office will be launched in April.
