The US Senate Urged to Act Against Korea" s Unfair Trade

The U.S. Senate appended a resolution for the budget bill it approved on March 25, that calls for the end of unfair trade practices by Korean pork and beef producers, according to a report by the Korea International Trade Association's Washington branch released on Friday, April 9. This resolution has the potential to do great damage to Korea's meat exports.
The report said that the U.S. Senate insisted on the Korean gorvernment's execution of the agreement made in 1993. The report added that the Senate requested the USTR and the Bureau of Agricultural Administration to investigate the Korean government's subsidizing of pork producers as it would violate the international agreement and damage the exports of U.S. meat.
Observers said that the U.S. Senate attributes the ten-fold increase of Korean pork exports to Japan since 1992 to a Korean subsidy, which greatly harms U.S. meat exports to Japan.
The U.S. exported 700 million dollars of pork and 1.5 billion dollars of beef to Japan, its largest exporting market.
