"Corruption Deemed a Serious Issue"

A large majority of Koreans think corruption in Korean society is a serious issue, a recent research study said.
In a survey which asked 500 Korean adults throughout the country how he or she felt about corruption in general, 48.5 percent answered 'very serious' while another 44.8 percent responded 'quite serious', according to a report on 'the actual condition of citizen's anti-corruption attitude' presented on April 12 by the Academy of Korean Studies in a seminar sponsored by the Korean Public Administration Science Society.
The most seriously implicated in corruption for those surveyed in the multiple choice poll were 'politicians'(76.1 percent), 'police and prosecutors'(26.8 percent), and 'the government'(23 percent).
Forty-six percent of people attribute the main factor in corruption is 'habitual bribery within the public sector'(lower officials bribing senior officials) while 35.1 percent feel it is, 'the avarice for money of public officials'.
Only 9.1 percent replied that 'low salaries of public officials' were a factor.
The sectors in which people judge corruption a serious concern are 'regulations and control'(85.5 percent), 'bidding'(74.6 percent),'tax affairs'(71.3 percent), 'traffic policemen'(70.4 percent), 'teachers'(67.3 percent).
