President Kim Avows Coalition Nomination

President Kim Dae Jung declared,'The NCNP and ULD should unite in nominating candidates for the 16th general election, as the coalition's nomination for the by-election on March 30 was productive.'
At the interview to be broadcasted on the evening of April 19 to commemorate the opening of KBS' Taegu regional branch headquarters, President Kim said, 'The NCNP and ULD should be national parties through coalition nominations without any miscarriages.'
Although the NCNP and ULD have adopted candidates jointly since the 1997's presitential election, it is the first time that President Kim publicly avowed coalition nominees. President Kim's comment is considered to reflect his intention of sustaining the cooperation between the two parties beyond the 16th general election, regardless of the power structure.
In relation to the national party, the president emphasized, 'Now there are common talks about ex-presidents' establishing new parties based on a certain region. But we should have national parties that have seats throughout the country.'
The leader of the NCNP, President Kim added, 'To accept the young generation who will manage the 21st century and equip successors are very important. At a not too distant date, I will start real acceptance and accommodation for the next generation of leaders by forming an organization within the party.'
President Kim pointed to specialists in various fields and individuals related to the past democratization movement as targets for inclusion.
Regarding political reform, he presented subjects such as a whole-year congress, governing through general meetings rather than partial or sub-meetings, introduction of a one question-one answer system, revitalizing the use of volunteers, simplifying party organization, the constituency system for national parties, and transparency of political funds.
