Seoul Subway Accident Occurs

A subway accident occurred at Tangsan station, the terminus of Seoul subway system's second line, at 1:09 p.m., April 22, four days into a general strike of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation (SMSC).
The accident was caused by a subway driver's mishandling of train number 2226 as it rolled into Tangsan station. The train went beyond the stopping line and crashed into a 1.5-meter-high barricade that lies in front of the Tangsan railway bridge, which is under construction.
If the train was going faster, it could have passed through the barricade and derailed, falling onto the 88 Olympic Road.
The accident injured three people aboard the train and damaged four connecting cars when the first car derailed.
SMSC is investigating the exact cause of the accident, although presumeably the accident took place because the substitute driver, filling in due to the labor union's strike, failed to see the signal and stop line due to his accumulated fatigue.
