New Regulations for Personal Internet Sites

An individual can independently register and use an internet domain beginning in June.
However, in an effort to impair people from registering a slew of domains in the hopes of re-selling them to companies, as was the case with individuals registering websites in anticipation of the Mobile and Exon merger, individuals or companies are deprived of the rights of a website address unless they make the site functional through a server or web hoster within three months after the date of registration.
The Ministry of Information and Communication on May 6 confirmed and announced its new policy on Internet websites and domains.
Under the old policy, people could only use an internet website set up by companies or agencies registered as websites.
The ministry also prepared a new internet domain system to spread the use of the Internet in elementary, middle, and high schools across the nation. Accordingly, elementary schools can establish their own internet websites in the form of http://...es.kr; middle schools can have sites ending in .ms.kr; and high schools will end in .hs.kr.
It decided to automatically delete an individual's internet website if the site is not registered after the registration period elapses.
A company or organization can register a website or domain by paying 30,000 won in a registration fee, and an individual can do so at a cost of 20,000 won.
