Guns to Be Converted into Bell of Peace

The guns used in wars of the 20th century will be reborn as a bell, symbolizing peace, and a flower-covered hill will be made of the stones and earth from battle fields.
The Kyonggi provincial government announced on May 6 that it will build a 21-ton bell, made by melting triggers and firing pins from guns used in battles, at Imjinkak, an observation building overlooking the 38th parrallel, which partitions the two Koreas.
The weight of the bell, 21 tons, represents 'No war in the 21st century.'
The guns to be melted are from the Russia-Japan War begun in 1904, World War I and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War and the latest conflict- the fighting in Kosovo.
The provincial government is negotiating with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to collect rifles through Korean embassies in other countries.
The dispersed families resulting from the Korean War, North Korean defectors to the South, and citizens born in North Korean will be invited to strike the bell 21 times during the opening minute of the year 2000, a plaintive call for peace in the 21st century.
Along with this, the flower hill of peace will be built with stones and earth gathered from several historical battle fields such as Marathon of the Persian War, Waterloo where Napoleon fought, and Kosovo.
